'We need to ensure each bird has access to an open range, but it's a chicken's freedom of choice.'
Sensitive chickens are demanding the right to stay indoors following a stoush between consumer group Choice and the Australian Egg Corporation, which represents 400 commercial egg producers.
Choice presented the egg corporation with a Shonky Award for misleading marketing last week because it allows "free-range" layers to be kept in crowded sheds so big that many of them can't find their way to the door and never go outside.
"Some of us just aren't outdoorsy types," a brown hen, who asked not to be named, told The Sun-Herald. "We can't all be triathletes, can we?"

I read somewhere - or it might have been in a book M. was reading - that chickens find 'free ranging' in such large groups and spaces very stressful because they can only identify up to 30 other chooks and so the pecking order gets lost and stress prevails. Poor things - if the stoushes that happen at our place over nesting boxes are anything to go by it's no wonder they don't venture far!

Yes, will have a go but haven't had much energy recently.
