8 things I hate about you

I hate Santa. I mean I REALLY hate Santa.

As a Christian Santa stands for so many things that I am against.

  1. Santa is racist. Does he visit kids of all cultures in all countries in the world?

  2. Santa discriminates. Some kids get lots of presents and some kids get none. Some kids don't even know of the existence of Santa!

  3. Santa requires us to lie to our kids. He doesn't really come down the chimney or drive a sleigh but we convince our kids that he does.

  4. Santa has unrealistic standards. He judges based on whether we have been good or bad. And parents use these standards to manipulate and bribe their kids into behaving.

  5. Santa encourages consumerism. He even suggests we make up a list of the things we want.

  6. Santa doesn't buy any of the presents himself...parents have been co-opted into his evil plan.

  7. Santa is a clever marketing device popularised by Coca Cola's man in the red suit.

  8. Santa steals the glory that rightly belongs to Jesus. In the end this is the thing I hate the most. The God of the universe sent his only Son to be born in a stable and to die on a cross so we do not have to face God's judgement. And yet we teach our children the lie about a man in a red suit as being more important.

There is more to Christmas than a fat man in a red suit.

I know it's a bit off tack but the idea of Thanksgiving appeals to me more, even though it has it's own history that is quite different to why I would want to swap it for Christmas. I hate the focus on what you want rather than what you can give and the rampant consumerism that goes with it.

Yes, I agree.
I know nothing about Thanksgiving but I would like to know more.
Even the name is appealing.

We celebrated Thanksgiving this year with a couple of other families. Trying to start a family tradition that has nothing to do with presents or chocolate.

I hate Santa too. We are a Santa free household.
