When you keep animals there is always going to be the chance that something dies.
When the kids were young they had a female rabbit called 'Gus' named after a friend's male bunny. She didn't die but many of her babies did. We buried them in shoe boxes in the garden.
'Max', the budgie, died only a few days after we got him and was quickly replaced by 'Elvis'. 'Elvis' lived a long and happy life, surviving two house moves and the new climate in the Blue Mountains. Unfortunately I forgot to feed him and he died.
'Puddle', our first bantam Silver Appleyard duck, was killed by 'Digby' when we had friends over to play. She was buried in the garden. The six year old boy in the family was keen to dig her up after a couple of weeks! 'Puddle's' mate, 'Splash' died of unknown causes.
We have had lots of chooks die. We hand raised eight day old Australorp chicks and have three left two years later. Several died as chicks and the others just died. One of my Sussex Light girls died too. reason unknown.
Guppies don't live long in our tank. Hubby is responsible for them. At the moment the massive die back has halted and we even have babies!
Dogs and cats seem to be exempt from the 'death in custody' curse which is a good thing. I don't think I could cope with losing one of them!
When my brother died this year six year old boy said "We have a lot of deaths in custody, don't we Mum".
He is right. We do.
