A friend of mine from Backyard Poultry has rescued some battery hens and started a blog: Operation Gloria: A road to recovery. The photos are distressing and the details about how these birds have spent the first 14 months of their lives are horrible. But we need to understand cage-egg production so we can make informed decisions about the kind of eggs we buy. Also worth checking out her link to FreeBetty.com The Natural Lives of Chickens.

Thanks for sharing that link for Gloria, the battery hen. I will share this with my students.
Most the battery hen girls I adopted have now passed on but I still have 2 birds from that lot. Their lives are much happier (in fact I imagine they would have been turned into broilers ages ago if still at the battery hen place)
